TRADE ECONOMIST SURVEYS PROSPECTS

For Latin America Policy Under New President And Congress
Gary Hufbauer, the Reginald Jones Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington D.C., will be the luncheon speaker at Hughes Hubbard’s seminar on ‘New Prospects for Latin America,’ to be held on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at the Biltmore Hotel, Coral Gables, Florida. He will address such questions as:

• What are the prospects for the renegotiation of NAFTA and CAFTA-DR?
• What are the prospects for the Free Trade Agreements with Colombia and Panama? For the Free Trade Area of the Americas?
• What economic steps can the new President and Congress take to improve relations between the United States and Latin America?

Mr. Hufbauer was recently among a group of Washington trade experts who support free trade and who urged the new President and Congress to seek modifications to U.S. trade policy, such as focusing negotiations on economically significant trading partners and responding to the economic dislocation of some American workers. Most recently, as a member of the Trade Advisory Group at the Council of the Americas/Americas Society, he helped author the report "Building the Hemispheric Growth Agenda: A New Framework for Policy." This report outlines recommendations for recharging the hemispheric growth agenda within the reality of global economic turbulence. He was among the speakers at the January 13 launch of this report in Washington, D.C
