Pierluigi Collina is arguably the greatest referee in football history. During an almost 30-year career, he took charge of the most high-profile matches in the sport, and won almost every available accolade.

Standing more than six foot tall with a piercing glare, Mr Collina was one of the most distinctive figures in sport – but moreover, he had a record of making swift decisions which were almost invariably correct, then remaining confident about his choice.

Born in Bologna, Italy, Mr Collina has been awarded Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and holds an honorary degree from the University of Hull.

  • Was awarded FIFA ‘Best referee of the Year’ prize for six consecutive years between 1998 and 2003.
  • Was named Serie A Referee of the Year seven times.
  • Refereed a grand slam of the most prestigious matches in soccer, including the finals of the World Cup, Champions League, UEFA Cup, and Olympics.
